267700 chars became 50457, and a save 2.8 s became 1.15 s. But the payload fell 5.3x while the time fell only 2.4x: what remains is no longer the size, it is the trip - TLS handshake, round trip, Gitea creating the commit. A fixed six to eight tenths of a second whatever the load. That is this transport's floor, and it closes the question. The other two routes are no longer worth it: publishing in the background would remove one second of waiting at the price of "saved" ceasing to mean "published", and compression would change the format on both sides to shave a share that has become the minority.
